Well, I am way behind in posting so I am going to try to throw up some quick posts about what has been going on this summer. Basically I have not been home at all, it started in mid June with me leaving for Chicago to give a talk at the Chicago Herpetological Society. While there I was lucky enough to be put up by Mike Dloogatch. Mike has lived in Chicago for a long time so it was awesome to get to try a Chicago steak sandwich from one of his favorite spots. The man also has a Rainman like ability to remember obscure herps from all over the globe and has done some cool traveling, which allows for plenty of good herp based conversations at night. On top of that he has one of the most awesome Herp book collections I have ever seen. As I love books it was a blast to get to go through his collection and read bits and pieces from a few before I left.
While in Chicago, on one of the days I was taken out by Jason Hood in an attempt to find a Chicagoland Massasauga (Sistrurus catenatus catenatus). We went to a spot that was a long shot but a long shot is a lot better than no shot. Unfortunately did not find one but I did get to see a bunch of crayfish and habitat that they at least used to be found in. Afterwards we also stopped by The Wildlife Discovery Center north of Chicago that is run by Rob Carmichael. I had not seen the place since probably 2007 so it was nice to see how it has changed since then and talk with Rob again.
After the talk I was picked up by a friend of mine, Cindy Steinle, who drove me up to Wisconsin to meet up with Carl Koch in an effort to find some Timber rattlesnakes.
Unfortunately we did not find any as it was blistering hot, but I did get to see a shed skin outside of where one usually hangs out. So it was a fun day as any day herping, even when not finding anything, is better than a day inside.
From there it was back to Chicago so I could fly to Indiana for a buddies wedding and see my family for 2 weeks. I would like to thank the entire Chicago Herpetological Society for inviting me out to speak and in particular Mike for putting me up and Jason, Cindy and Carl for taking me out herping.
